We picked up this idea from Joe Sanfelippo last summer at a conference and took it to the next level. We did a drawing for all staff where they could win a free half-day of vacation during December (right before the holiday break). Even more, that half day would be covered by a district director or administrator. Not only did our staff enjoy the time off (we heard lots of stories of staff spending time with family, getting nails done, and...naps!), our district leadership also learned a lot about being in the "trenches" while doing the job of their direct-reports. We can't wait to do Round #2 again next year!
